Rhode Island Blood Center Press Conference

Today The Rhode Island Blood Center held a press conference at T's Restaurant in East Greenwich to unveil my print for the 2010-2011 Seasons' Pass program. It was an honor to have been selected to be the Artist for the program, as I am following in the steps of great RI Artists such as Maxwell Mays, Richard Grosvenor, Harley Bartlett, Anthony Tomaselli, and others.

The Seasons' Pass program is in its 9th year, and is reserved for those who donate blood 4 or more times per year. Those in the program will receive a print of the original work unveiled today, and the program has helped to double the number of 4 time-per-year donors, and has resulted in more than 32,000 additional blood donations.

Anyone who has donated four or more times from March 1 2010- February 28, 2011 can pick up a print at any donor center or blood drive. Please visit the Blood Center's web site at www.ribc.org

If you would like to start donating for next years Seasons' Pass program its not too late, and the incoming Artist for the 2011-2012 Seasons' Pass will be Kendra Ferreira, of Middletown, RI.

Denise and Michael's Wedding

It was a wonderful January weekend for Denise and Michael. Snow covered landscape and crisp clear air were on call for the three day event. Guests enjoyed a comfortable bus ride to Manning Chapel and a fun filled reception at the Biltmore. Denise's niece and nephew entertained with violins both at the rehearsal and wedding reception. It was a glorious experience and such fun to photograph.

Alex and Doug's Wedding

I recently photographed the wedding of Douglas and Alexandra this past weekend. It was a beautiful Saturday for early November. The ceremony was in Jamestown, and we went to Beavertail light to take formals of the wedding party. The lighting was great and there was a large swell creating breakers in the background, you cant get a better backdrop! The reception was also at Alex's parents and had a great band under a large tent in the backyard. One of my favorite weddings in a long time, seeing my two sons and all the GBSA crowd made it very interesting and personal! Enjoy some of the photos below!

Providence Art Club Show

It happened! Sunday October 31st from 2-4pm was the opening for my show with Ron Rosenstock. The Installation Committee at the Providence Art Club did a fabulous job, "Thank You." If you have time stop by; the hours are M-F 12-4pm, Sat-Sun 2-4pm, and the show hangs until November 17. All exhibits are free and open to the public.

Adirondack Snow

I have had a great time working in the Goddard Partridge Printmaking studio over the last 3 months. The whole process reminds me of the photographic darkroom, the excitement that I felt when the print appeared in the developing tray. Pulling the print off of the plate on the press bed is very similar, seeing the print emerge before your eyes when you slowly pull the paper off of the plate.

I also experimented with toning the black ink to create more warm colors for the imagery, just like different black & white printing papers. Additionally, I hand colored the Arches paper after the prints had dried and it has a great surface to work on. It was a challenge to hand color each print the same so that they could stand as an edition of prints.

My final images, one in black and white and the other has color added. Such fun!

I spent an exciting two days at the Goddard Partridge Studio in Pawtucket Rhode Island creating solar plates to printmake with. Using photographs that I had taken and printed on mylar, we placed them on top of the plate and under glass. Exposing them to sunlight, etched the surface of a specially prepared metal plate. Regina Partridge, Richard Harrington and I listened intently as Carol Fitzsimmonds explained and demonstrated the ins and outs of this process. I am excited to bring this process into Angell Fine Arts as a addition to our wonderful products.

Leave a Legacy

Recently I photographed Alma and Tony in their home. It was an encredible experience working with two intelligent and talented people. We shared stories about their lives and I shared stories about my life. We laughed and enjoyed each others company all while I was photographing and sharing the images with them on my computer. They were intrigued with the process and were very happy. They purchased images for their family and friends. Alma even said that it was the best photograph that Tony ever has had!

Telling a Family's Story

I recently designed an album for a family with three generations. The album was a holiday gift for a client's parents and her sister. I did something very different with this album. I incorporated the parents song into the pages of the book. The album describes the different generations and the love that they share. It is a wonderful celebration of their family.

My name is Danny Waterman and I am one of Ruth’s students at Rocky Hill School. Photography is my favorite hobby; I’m always fascinated by the way photography opens up new worlds and opportunities, and there is nothing that makes me as relaxed and focused (no pun intended) as looking through a camera lens and composing an image.

So, naturally, I could think of no better job than working with Ruth and Sarah at Angell Fine Arts. In my time here, I have gained experience and insight into how a business is run, knowledge that may very well come in handy in the future, as I plan to become either a veterinarian or professional photographer depending on where life takes me. Looking ahead, I hope to incorporate what I’ve learned here into other aspects of my life and to use it to the best of my abilities.

My favorite areas of photography are nature/wildlife, close-up/macro, landscapes, and architecture. I love the motion and energy of animals in the wild, as well as the serenity of trees in nature.

Close-up and macro photography lifts a blind from our eyes, allowing us to see the intricate detail and stunning color of small things that we would otherwise overlook, and pushes the limits of what we can see.

Landscapes convey a sense of depth and “being there,” and present a scene in a vibrant way.

As with landscapes, architecture expresses depth and place in a colorful way, but they illustrate shape, structure, and pattern.

Creating Memories with Albums

Photographs are one of the best ways to capture the memories and feelings that a person experiences with their family. At Angell Fine Arts, Ltd. we focus on those memories, favorite places, individual qualities, personalities, feelings, and expressions, and portray them in our portraits and albums. This year we photographed a multigeneration family not Rhode Island based. The majority coming from the west coast we gathered at Portsmouth Abbey. Rarely together as a family, we had the opportunity to help them enjoy and remember this day through photography. A twenty page album seemed to be the best decision to highlight all of the wonderful images that we took that day. I designed their album incorporating all of their favorite images from the day. I asked the patriarch to write something he would like to include. He sent me ten words that described his family. I included them on a special page with one of their favorite landscape photographs. This page made the album even more personal, and it was a gift from him to everyone in his family, an heirloom that they will treasure for years to come.

There are many reasons to create an album; babies are growing constantly, children are growing and changing, and families move from place to place. Having photographs taken each year of their life, or multiple times during the year is a way to chronicle your child's growth. You can create an album that includes photographs from each session, and it tells the story of your child.

The most important part of creating an album is planning, and it begins at your consultaion. Planning includes deciding where you would like your portrait taken, which photographs you would like taken, what size and type of album would be best for you, and how many images you would like to have in the album. All of these decisions will help Ruth when photographing, so she can have an idea of what to capture during your session. The other important part of creating an album is design time. The process can be very time consuming. It can take anywhere from one month to over six months to complete the album. It depends on the amount of images, the amount of revisions, the extent of the retouching, and the type of album. During the album process it is best for the client to be involved. The more a person can tell us about their ideas and visions the easier it is for us to create an album that they will love.

Think about the reasons that you can create an album. Do you have a newborn? Is your son or daughter going away to college? Is your family visiting from out of town? Is your baby growing up too fast? You can create an album with photographs and memories that you and your family will treasure forever.

Designing Albums with Sarah

These past weeks I have been working on some exciting album designs. I designed an album plan for a couple who met when they were teenagers, and they just renewed their vows. The imagery was beautiful from their day. Family, friends, co-workers, and their sons attended the event. It was very important to them to remember all of those who were there, and include them all in the album. One of the best things about working with them was that they put their trust in me to create something that they would cherish. When I got their feedback on the design, they loved it. That was such a nice thing to hear, because I worked so hard on it.
I have also been working with a large family to put together an album for their grandfather. Their images were very casual, fun, and joyful. They also gave me free range on the design, and I was able to incorporate more of their scenic shots as backgrounds.

Each of these albums were different, but both were challenging. I enjoy putting client's images together to tell a story of their memories.

Introducing Diana

I am Diana Perez, a junior from the MET high school. I have been interning here at Angell Fine Arts Ltd. for a couple of months, and it is absolutely fantastic. I am able to enjoy this opportunity due to the mentoring program the MET supplies. The core curriculum of the MET is to allow students to follow their passions through outside experiences known as internships. Through this, I am able to work with Ruth and Sarah, and help the business out to the best of my ability. I plan on continuing to intern here at Angell Fine Arts Ltd. and watching the business grow.

With internships come projects to prove my learning. With Ruth and Sarah's help, I have decided that my project will be to photograph socio-economic and global problems via the mediums of photography and creative writing. I will do photo essays on the pictures that I capture while figuring out what represents each sociological issue I feel as pressing in both Providence and South County. The end product will be a gallery night to not only show off the work I am proud of, but to introduce Ruth and Sarah to my school peers. I am also hoping to build an art portfolio through this project, as college nears.

It is a pleasure working with both Ruth and Sarah, and I simply cannot wait to see how not only the business, but our relationships blossom.

Hearthside House in Lincoln Rhode Island

Over the Christmas Holidays I had the pleasure to be introduced to the Hearthside House in Lincoln Rhode Island, http://www.hearthsidehouse.org/. Kathy Hartley, President of the Friends of Hearthside asked me to photograph each decorated room in the home in addition to the outside (and of course it was freezing!)for a book to be published on historic homes decorated for the holidays. Hearthside was the only Rhode Island home asked to be part of this fabulous book. It was a wonderful experience and I am honored to be part of the whole publishing process. The book should be completed and appear on store shelves in time for next years holiday season. I will keep you all posted on the release of the book. Thanksgiving weekend in the snow

After a long day it is great to sit by the fire and have a glass of wine and read a book.

While walking on the path to the cabin I had to take this photograph.
The view from our front porch looks over Clear pond and is everchanging.

We built this cabin in 2004 and 2005 with friends and family. It is such a quiet and beautiful place to escape to.

Thanskgiving weekend was a wonderland of snow. We headed north to our cabin near Tupper Lake and the closer we got the more snow there was. Bill, Alex, Garrett and I wandered through the snow on skis or snow shoes and enjoyed the quiet beauty of the woods.

The Island of Tobago

Bill and I went on vacation just after the new year and took a cruise on Celebrity Cruise Lines. What a great time we had! Welcome to our blog! I am very excited to show you what I have been up to over the last few months. It is such a wonderful thing to be able to enjoy life through imagery, whatever kind that may be. I had an exceptional 2008 with all of you. It was such a pleasure to work with all the families this past year, telling their stories and sharing energies with them. I look forward to more of the same in 2009.
